So, a + 6 = 0, which means that a = –6, or a – 4 = 0, which means a = 4. The equation with the variable b has the same solutions, and so b = –6 or b = 4. Since a ≠ b, then a = –6 and b = 4, which means a + b = ?6 + 4 = ?2, or a = 4 and b = ?6, which means that a + b = 4 + (?6) = ?2
